Mansfield Dam

Up

Mansfield Dam is located off of RR 620, and we fly out of the parking lot, located at 30 deg 23.672' N and 97 deg 54.538' W, at an altitude of 751 feet. We fly out of the parking lot at the north end of the dam.

Good winds are out of the south to south west, and even if there aren't any winds, if the sun is out the dam creates some very large thermals.

Current weather at Mansfield dam can be found here. You can view it from the the TerraServer here.

Post 9/11 paranoia. Let's hope I never lose my plane back here :)

One glider trick -- look for groups of birds flying around without flapping their wings, and join them. No, there's no plane in this picture (it's hard to fly and take pictures at the same time.)

pict1915

This is what you launch your plane over. It's a leap of faith -- if you don't find lift, or your launch is bad, it goes right into those trees, and they're 20-30 feet tall. Fortunately, there's poles down there to get your plane down with.

No idea what this thing is. An unused turbine?

This is the dam from another angle. The part where we fly is not in this picture, but just to the left of the top left part of it.

Chasing a bird, probably a hawk. They tend to ignore the plane, but every once in a while you'll startle one :)

Soaring with the birds ...
