Misc Planes

Up

Here's pictures of various planes that I own or have owned over the years ...

cars1

I've got a few R/C cars too. But they're not nearly as much fun as the planes ...

glider

A glider I bought at a garage sale. Haven't actually flown it, but I'll probably replace the Cox 0.049 engine with an electric motor and fix it up sometime soon.

zagi-400x-1

My Zagi 400x. The body has since been retired, but the radio gear and motor lives on in the XE2.

hobbistar60-1

Hobbico Hobbistar 60 . This is what I used as a trainer. Flies pretty well, actually.

kalt-helicopter

I received this in trade for the Pico Moth. It's a fixer-upper, and I haven't fixed it up yet, so I haven't flown it yet. That, and I'm a bit scared of it -- this page may help explain why.

pico_moth-1

This is a GWS Pico Moth. It flew ok, but it was just *too* slow and fragile for my taste. I traded it for the Kalt Helicopter (which was a very good deal.)

sturdy_birdy_II-1

My Sturdy Birdy II. Flies like ass, but it IS tough.

us40-1

My Ultra Stick 40, powered by a Tower Hobbies 46 engine. Nice plane.

us40-crash-1

December 2nd, 2001, tradgedy struck!. The club was doing their `Blue Santa' event and was having a `fun fly'. The contest was `Limbo' -- get your plane underneath the ribbon, but don't touch the ground. I seemed to have forgotten that I also needed to avoid the poles holding up the ribbon ...

It's all fixed up now and still flying, as of 07/2003 ...

blau1

My Tower Hobbies Uproar 40. Powered by a Thunder Tiger 46 Pro engine which gives it more thrust than weight -- fun! Very aerobatic plane, and quite a handful to fly.

blau2

Oddly, due to the large spacing between the ribs in the wings, the covering on the wings act like a drum, great amplifying the noise of the engine. This plane is a lot louder than most planes of this size for that reason. But boy can it tear up the sky ...

butterfly1

My Dynaflite Butterfly plane. Flies VERY slowly. Wingspan is 99 inches. Powered by a OS MAX 20 engine with a Perry carburator.

xe2-1

Combat Wings XE2. Actually, this plane used to be a Zagi 400x, but the plane just plain wore out, so I moved all the electronics into this plane. Flies very nicely for a flying wing. Powered by an Astroflight 020 brushless motor, this thing really has some power for an electric plane.

xe2-2

xe2-3

Here's a closer view of the motor. I have a folding prop on right now -- I was slope soaring it at Mansfield Dam. The XR is lighter, so it glides better, but a mistake at the dam can easily turn into a several hour adventure trying to find your plane in the trees or even in the water (unlikely, but possible) so the motor is very nice for getting you out of tight situations.

xe2-4

xr-1

My Combat Wings XR glider. I use it for slope soaring.

us40-crash-3

This wasn't actually caused by a particularly rough landing. Instead, the wood that the landing gear is attached to wasn't very strong. Easy to fix with some epoxy, however ...

unknown-plane1

I'm not even sure what this plane is. Like how I repaired it's `nose' with a bottled water bottle? Update: it's not unknown anymore. It's a `Flying Start' with improvements (landing gear, see-thru nose), sold by Hobby Shack in 1995 or so.

unknown-plane2

unknown-plane3

Something you don't see every day -- a pull start on an airplane. It's really quite nice, however -- no need for a chicken stick or starter.

flutterbug1

This is either a Flutterbug or a Gyro-1. Picked it up at the HCAM Blue Santa auction. Notice how it only has one wheel :)

flutterbug2

flutterbug3

glider2

Picked this up at the Georgetown Swap Meet (2004-01-16). The wingspan is right at 100 inches, and it has rudder, elevator and spoiler/tow release controls. It's meant for launching with a bungee, winch or tow plane.

estes

Picked this up at the Georgetown swap meet (2004-01-16) for less than the price of the motor in the back. Not sure what I'm going to do with it :)

esc-let-out-the-magic-smoke

I launched the XE2 and the motor never roared to life. Instead, the ESC caught fire and let out all the magic smoke. I have no idea why. $50 and a few weeks later, Astroflight has repaired it and it'll fly again ...

fiberglass-oops

I bought this glider used from a local guy and flew it at the local slopes, but broke the tail boom in a landing that I didn't think was that bad. Now I need to figure out how best to repair this ...

xr-2

The XR was getting really ratty, so I tore the covering off and redid it. It looks like a new plane now, at least for a while ...

superfly-electric

This is an Superfly that I purchased at the Georgetown swap meet. It doesn't fly particularly well, but it's certainly maeuverable. I wish it had been built as a pusher instead of a puller -- with the motor and prop in the front, any crash usually results in something breaking.

hpim0137

M60 slope soaring plane.

hpim0448

Dethalon 0.40 sized glow powered model.

hpim0449

hpim0450

hpim0458

Yellow Bee from Harbor Freight Tools. Cheap. Actually flies pretty well for a $30 plane.

hpim0459

hpim0460

hpim0998

Not sure what this is -- got it at a swap meet. It's got a speed 600 motor and a 7 cell NiMH pack. Doesn't perform very well.

hpim0999

hpim1000

hpim1298

Hotliner of some sort. Phasor 30-3 direct drive motor, made for 8 cell NiCd but I'm using 3s LiPos. Actually thermals pretty well.

hpim1300

hpim1301

hpim1305

I believe that this is an Enigma DLG.

hpim1306

hpim1307

hpim1308

hpim1389

Impulse Classic. I get a lot of time on this plane, especially with a camera taped to the side.

hpim1391

dscn2489

Ultrastick 25e. Electric, with an Eflite Power 32 motor on it. I broke my Ultrastick 40 some time ago and decided to not repair it, so I replaced it with this instead.

dscn2491

dscn2492

dscn2493

You can see that I had a small digital movie camera stuck to the landing gear, but the movie didn't come out -- the camera battery died mid-flight and I haven't tried again.
